Shorter screening test intervals were associated with higher rates of endoscopic curative resection. In addition, patients undergoing gastric cancer screening had a significantly higher rate of endoscopic curative resection compared with subjects who had never been screened. In multivariate analysis, regular surveillance endoscopy was the only factor predicting curative endoscopic resection (odds ratio, 6.099 95% confidence interval, 2.532-14.933). Patients with curative endoscopic resection had fewer alarm symptoms/signs than other groups. Of 469 gastric cancer patients, 147 (31.3%) had undergone curative endoscopic resection, 260 (55.4%) had undergone curative surgical resection, and 62 (13.3%) underwent non-curative resection or were in an inoperable state. All patients completed questionnaires about clinical information, including interval between surveillance tests for gastric cancer. We retrospectively reviewed data of patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer who underwent treatment at Seoul St. This study investigates factors affecting endoscopic curative resection of early gastric cancer in population-based screening for gastric cancer. Since population-based screening for gastric cancer in Korea was implemented, endoscopic treatment of early gastric cancer has become increasingly popular. Thus, the present study demonstrated that elevated serum SH2B1 levels may increase the risk of GC. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that overexpression of SH2B1 contributes to the malignant transformation of normal gastric epithelial cells. These results were not altered following the exclusion of outliers. Furthermore, the association between SH2B1 levels and GC was more evident in younger than in older participants, and statistically significant in current smokers but not in nonsmokers. When analyses were stratified further by sex, age and smoking, an association between increased levels of SH2B1 and GC was identified in males but not in females. The results demonstrated that high levels of serum SH2B1 were associated with an increased GC risk (odds ratio, 3.23 95% confidence interval, 2.45-5.65). Levels of serum SH2B1 were measured in 563 patients diagnosed with GC during the follow-up period and in 1,126 matched healthy controls. To identify whether increased serum SH2B1 is a risk factor for GC, the present study performed a nested case-control study of patients within the Chinese cohort study. However, its function in GC has not yet been investigated. Increased expression of the Src homology 2 B adaptor protein 1 (SH2B1) may stimulate the malignant progression of lung cancer, esophageal cancer and neuroblastoma. Identifying novel risk factors will facilitate the development of therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat GC. Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common types of cancer in humans and the second leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. An improvement in diagnosis may be achieved by newer endoscopy technology which enables cancers to be identified more easily, or by an inexpensive screening test to select patients with extensive gastric atrophy, thereby identifying those at risk who can then be screened endoscopically. A further barrier is the widespread prescription of proton pump inhibitors that heal malignant ulcers and diminish symptoms, thus rendering them more difficult to identify clinically and endoscopically. Early gastric cancer is infrequently diagnosed in the West because the low prevalence of gastric cancer means that endoscopists do not search with the same diligence as they do in Japan. T1 cancer has an excellent prognosis, but most of the patients either have no symptoms or complain of long-standing, non-specific dyspepsia alarm symptoms, when identified, usually indicate that the cancer is already inoperable. This is because the disease is not identified in the West until later in its evolution. Five-year survival of gastric cancer is 10% in Western countries compared with over 50% in Japan.
